LTWC finished its second year tagging and tracking the movements of cutthroat trout in the Bear & Ferguson Creek basins. Over 140 trout were tagged this season,Over 375 trout have been tagged since the Cutthroat Trout Migration Study began in the fall of 2010.
This study, along with the fish passage barrier assessment survey in 2009, is helping us understand and prioritize fish passage corrections and habitat improvements for trout and other native aquatic species. Involvement from watershed neighbors and volunteers has made this research possible – we wouldn’t be able to collect this information without them! Several landowners have hosted a trap or antenna on their property, and more than 60 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers have participated in the project through tagging fish or entering and graphing data. Nearly 50 individuals have helped with tagging and data entry this year alone!
The Council held a celebratory barbeque earlier in June for volunteers who tagged trout and landowners who hosted a fish trap this season. Gary & Jo Holzbauer graciously hosted the event at their home along Ferguson Creek. Thank you to each person who has volunteered their time or property to help us learn more about this beloved native fish!
